The legal bit, in plain English

Privacy notice.

How The Website Oom looks after the personal information you share with us, in line with South Africa's Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA).

Last updated: 8 October 2026

Who we are

The Website Oom ("we", "us") designs, builds and looks after websites for South African businesses. For anything to do with your personal information, email us at uncle@thewebsiteoom.co.za.

What we collect

When you use our contact form, we collect the details you choose to give us:

  • your name, business name, email address and contact number;
  • how you'd like us to contact you, the package you're interested in, your domain name and current website;
  • what you tell us about your business, your ideas and your timeline.

We also record the date and the IP address your enquiry came from, so we can stop spam and abuse. Like all websites, our hosting provider keeps standard technical server logs.

Why we use it

  • To reply to your enquiry, put together a plan and prepare your set-up quote.
  • If you become a client, to build, launch and look after your website and to bill you.

We don't sell or rent your information, and we won't add you to a marketing list unless you ask us to.

The domain checker

When you check a domain name, the name you type is sent to the official domain registries (such as the ZA Central Registry for .co.za) and, in some cases, to Cloudflare's public DNS service, to see whether it's available. Please don't type anything personal into it.

Where it's kept and for how long

Enquiries are emailed to us, and a backup copy is kept in a private, password-protected area of our web hosting account. We keep enquiries for as long as we need them to respond and quote. If you don't become a client, we delete them within 12 months. Client records are kept for as long as the law requires.

Cookies

We don't use tracking, advertising or analytics cookies. Your browser may remember, for that visit only, that you've already seen our loading animation. That never leaves your device.

Your rights

You can ask us what information we hold about you, ask us to correct or delete it, or object to how we use it. Just email uncle@thewebsiteoom.co.za. If you're unhappy with how we've handled your information, you can complain to the Information Regulator.

Changes

If we change this notice, we'll update the date at the top of this page.
